So you are saying, on these occasions, I am stuck. There are OCCASIONS when I just want to SHUTDOWN the computer NOW and not wait while Windows gets ready or all this other update stuff it wants to do. I want the machine shut down NOW and I could then be aware to take my updates LATER NOT NOW. The problem is, that maybe I do not have time to wait for updates before the computer turns off. Typically you can restart or shutdown whenever you want, however with updates MS will request a shutdown or restart, as you experienced. If you interrupt this process then you can create problems with updates being in a staged condition, this requires quite a lot of work to fix. So it updates, then processes the update, during a restart procedure or a shutdown procedure either way you will get the update installed.
